New York/June 2009/Adrenaline: The Bowery Ballroom is always reliable for new and exciting live acts, like Los Straightjackets with their theatrical and intense performances in sweaty Mexican wrestler masks. (6 Delancey St. Manhattan Delancey/Bowery st.). (Posted by Stefan) New York/June 2009/Adrenaline - Gluttony: More live music can be found over in Brooklyn if you cross the strait, at Music Hall of Williamsburg, where legends like new York Dolls have played and you may even discover Morning After Girls (no, that’s the band whatever else you wished for) on the bill. Sharing the same wall-to-wall address is finally NorthSix, another fine live music venue. Maybe you could combine a live act with a visit to Brooklyn Brewery. Something like a beer tour ending off with some stagediving with Bob Mould of punklegends Husker Du or maybe backflipping to World Inferno Friendship Society (band names don’t come better than that). (NorthSix, 66 North 6th street. Brooklyn) (Brooklyn Brewery tours Sat and Sun afternoons every hour. Address . 1 Brewers Row/79 North 11th street – Brooklyn) (Posted by Stefan) New York/June 2009/Adrenaline: Still in Brooklyn? In the area of Williamsburg, a good place to head is the bar Union Pool, maybe not hardcore but nice guitar based music by the DJ’s and a truly appealing cocktail list. (484 Union Ave, Brooklyn/ off Skillman Ave) New York/June 2009/Adrenaline: If you can picture the combination eating homemade cakes and checking small new angry acts out, the place to go is The Cake Shop – always something unexpected, rarely a let-down.(152 Ludlow St, btwn. Stanton & Rivington) (Posted by Stefan) New York/June 2009/Adrenaline: Sometimes you could find fun tribute bands promising a sweet party night at The Mercury Lounge – Black Dog did their Zeppelin tribute here, as did Girls, Girls, Girls – the all chick tribute to Motley Crue. They have regular small bands as well. (217 E Houston St between Essex and Ludlow Sts) (Posted by Stefan) New York/June 2009/Adrenaline: So nothing is hardcore enough for you ? Well, this could be it then: Mars Bar in East Village, a good place to team up with friendly crust punks, homeless skate kids and possibly the ghost of Joey Ramone – a former local. (next door from CBGB’s old address: 25 East 1st Str/2nd Ave) (Posted by Stefan) New York/June 2009/Adrenaline: Lakeside Lounge, another punk and rockabilly bar choice in East Village, for the punks that haven’t graduated to Marz bar yet. (162 Avenue B (between 10th & 11th Streets) New York/November 2008/Adrenaline: In the last neighborhood in NY not bought by corporate real estate brokers – East Village – you can still avoid the slick decaffeine hazelnut Latte’s and zombie yuppies. Manitoba’s been around for a long time – run by punkrock legend Handsome Dick Manitoba from 70’s The Dictators. Some days it’s surprisingly low key, other days the jukebox is blaring punkrock and old timer punks are sharing drinks with strippers. Especially good at Monday Night Live at their Garageland Club. (Ave B, between 6th/7th street). (Posted by John P, New York) New York/November 2008/Adrenaline: Brooklyn Social Club is neither punk nor skate, but still a nice chill-out bar with an excellent house cocktail “Society Riposto” (Vodka, fresh mandarine and rosemary (!). Good for hangovers or if you want to practice your pick-up talents (Smith street between President and Caroll Street). (Posted by John P) New York/November 2008/Adrenaline: Being the chameleon of Brooklyn – The Lucky Cat Club - this place is great and different every time I go there. In the daytime, hang out with the unemployed, the bar people and the writers and artists or anyone else without a regular day job. Soak up the sun outside or just lean back inside on the couches. At night – or in the day if you’re decadent enough – try the one of a kind Spicy Green Bean Martinis. Chose from themes like Goth, Punk, Chess-tournaments , DJ’s or Techno. (245 Grand Street. Cross Street between Driggs Ave and Roebling St). (Posted by John P) New York/November 2008/Gluttony: A good hangover cure are the grilled corn knobs with Mexican cheese at La Esquina. This 24 hour diner-like place is serving well prepared Mexican dishes. Come here on a rainy night to get that real Taxidriver feeling. (106 Kenmare. # 646 613 7100). (Posted by John P) New York/November 2008/Adrenaline: Here’s the place – HiFI Club - where you can finally get revenge for all the times you’ve been ridiculed for trying to be a DJ. The jukebox plays more than 3000 obscure rock songs, so get here in time and have your quarters ready – line up your choice of songs and down those happy hour 2 for 1 drinks at the same time (4-8 pm). A good place to introduce East Village people to your (superior) music taste. (169 Avenue A, between 10th and 11th. Phone : 420 8392) (posted by Magnus J) |
